Choosing a Dermatology or Plastic Surgery Clinic in Korea: Check the Doctor’s Specialty First

Korea is a popular destination for cosmetic procedures such as Botox, dermal fillers, laser treatments, skin boosters, lifting procedures, and plastic surgery.

However, there is one important thing international patients should understand before choosing a clinic in Korea.

Seeing the words “Dermatology” or “Plastic Surgery” on a clinic’s website or advertisement does not necessarily mean that every doctor working there is a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

In Korea, a medical institution’s name, the medical departments it provides, and an individual doctor’s specialist qualification are separate concepts.

Understanding this distinction can help international patients make more informed decisions when choosing a clinic.

A Medical Department and a Medical Specialist Are Not the Same Thing

Under Korea’s Medical Service Act and its Enforcement Rule, there are regulations governing how medical institutions display their names and medical departments.

Recognized medical departments include internal medicine, surgery, plastic surgery, dermatology, family medicine, anesthesiology and pain medicine, and many others.

This is where international patients can sometimes become confused.

A clinic may provide dermatologic or cosmetic procedures without every doctor performing those procedures necessarily being a board-certified dermatologist.

For example, many clinics in Korea provide treatments such as:

Botox
Dermal fillers
Laser treatments
Skin boosters
Ultrasound or radiofrequency lifting
Acne treatments
Pigmentation treatments

However, the fact that a doctor performs these treatments does not automatically mean that the doctor is a board-certified dermatologist.

The same applies to cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures.

What Does “Medical Specialist” Mean in Korea?

In Korea, becoming a licensed physician and becoming a certified medical specialist are different stages of medical training.

A physician first obtains a medical license.

To become a specialist in a recognized medical specialty, the physician must then complete the required specialist training and obtain specialist certification.

Therefore,

a doctor who performs dermatologic procedures

and

a board-certified dermatologist

are not necessarily the same thing.

Likewise,

a doctor who performs cosmetic surgery

and

a board-certified plastic surgeon

are not necessarily the same thing.

This does not mean that a physician without a particular specialist qualification is automatically unqualified or incapable of performing a procedure.

The important point is that patients should verify the doctor’s actual credentials rather than assuming their specialty based solely on the treatments offered or the clinic’s marketing.

Pay Attention to the Clinic Name, Too

Medical institution names and signage are also regulated under Korean medical law.

Korea’s Medical Service Act establishes rules regarding the names that medical institutions may use, while more detailed requirements are provided in the Enforcement Rule of the Medical Service Act.

There are also specific rules regarding how medical specialties and specialist qualifications may be displayed.

For international patients, this means that English-language websites, social media accounts, advertisements, and translated clinic descriptions should not be the only sources used to determine a doctor’s qualifications.

Terms such as:

“Skin Clinic”

“Aesthetic Clinic”

“Beauty Clinic”

may be used in marketing.

They should not automatically be interpreted as proof that the doctor treating you is a board-certified dermatologist.

How I Would Choose a Clinic in Korea

If I were visiting Korea for dermatologic treatment or plastic surgery, I would not choose a clinic based only on price, Instagram photos, or before-and-after images.

I would first check the doctor’s profile.

One important Korean word to look for is:

전문의

This means “medical specialist.”

For example:

피부과 전문의 = Dermatology Specialist

성형외과 전문의 = Plastic Surgery Specialist

Simply seeing the words 피부과 (dermatology) or 성형외과 (plastic surgery) does not necessarily provide enough information to determine the individual doctor’s specialist qualification.

There is another important question to ask:

“Who will actually perform my procedure?”

Large cosmetic clinics may have several doctors.

The credentials of the clinic director or founder do not necessarily represent the qualifications of every doctor working at the clinic.

Before treatment, consider asking:

“Which doctor will perform my procedure?”

“Is that doctor a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon?”

Specialist Certification Is Important, but It Is Not Everything

Specialist certification can be an important piece of information when choosing a doctor, but it does not guarantee a good cosmetic result.

For procedures such as Botox, fillers, lasers, skin boosters, lifting treatments, and plastic surgery, other factors should also be considered.

These include:

the doctor’s experience with the specific procedure,

who performs the consultation and the actual procedure,

how the clinic manages complications,

whether appropriate emergency support is available,

whether the risks and alternatives are clearly explained,

and whether follow-up care is available after treatment.

For international patients, follow-up care is particularly important.

A procedure may initially appear successful while you are in Korea, but managing a complication can become much more difficult after returning to your home country.

Therefore, choosing a clinic based solely on a low price may not always be the best approach.

It is also worth asking what support will be available if something goes wrong after the procedure.

One Korean Word Medical Tourists Should Remember: 전문의

If you are traveling to Korea for medical treatment, remember this Korean word:

전문의 = Medical Specialist

피부과 전문의 = Dermatology Specialist

성형외과 전문의 = Plastic Surgery Specialist

When researching clinics in Korea, do not rely only on terms such as “Skin Clinic,” “Aesthetic Clinic,” “Beauty Clinic,” or “Plastic Surgery.”

Check the qualifications of the individual doctor who will actually examine and treat you.

Four Questions to Ask Before Getting a Procedure in Korea

Korea has a large and highly competitive cosmetic medical market, offering patients a wide range of clinics and procedures.

Having many choices can be an advantage.

However, it can also make choosing the right clinic more difficult, especially for international patients who are researching clinics from overseas through websites, social media, and advertisements.

Instead of asking only:

“How much does it cost?”

consider asking these four questions:

“Who is the doctor treating me?”

“What is the doctor’s medical specialty?”

“Who will actually perform the procedure?”

“What happens if I develop a complication?”

The answers to these questions may tell you more about a clinic than a discounted treatment package.

The key point is simple:

A clinic offering dermatology or plastic-surgery-related treatments and the doctor treating you being a certified specialist in dermatology or plastic surgery are two different pieces of information.

Before receiving medical or cosmetic treatment in Korea, check both.
